Why We Recommend It?

This guide highlights two possible regulatory avenues for municipalities and policy-makers to pursue in order to modernize the existing Canadian built environment. The Alterations to Existing Buildings code (AEB) and Mandatory Building Performance Standards (MBPS) are the key tools this report highlights in this endeavor.

The guide harnesses these tools to create a framework for municipalities to pursue innovative policy decisions, coupling the more conservative AEB code with the more sweeping MBPS legislation, which will drive more aggressive decarbonization.
