Why We Recommend It?

This Carbon Leadership Forum video series is a valuable resource for professionals who need broader and deeper knowledge of embodied carbon. The series offers a structured learning path that builds foundational understanding and introduces key tools and methods — from lifecycle assessment (LCA) to product comparisons using EPDs and whole-building evaluations.

While produced in the U.S., nearly all content is applicable to Canadian projects, especially Modules 1–4. Even the policy-focused Module 5 can be a helpful reference for local policymakers interested in comparative approaches

Featured Modules

Modules 1–4 are suitable for all audiences listed above, especially those involved in design, development, and construction. Module 5 is tailored specifically for policymakers and those shaping regulatory or procurement frameworks.

Module 1: Embodied Carbon 101

A comprehensive introduction to embodied carbon, including how it differs from operational carbon, why it matters, and how to measure and reduce it.

Module 2: Introduction to Lifecycle Assessment (LCA)

Learn what LCA is, how it’s used to measure embodied carbon, and why foreground and background data both matter. Covers LCA standards, system boundaries (cradle-to-gate vs. cradle-to-grave), and introduces how LCA informs both product-level and building-scale decisions.

Module 3: Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

Explains what EPDs are, how they’re developed and verified, and how they enable apples-to-apples material comparisons. Includes walkthroughs of typical EPDs, cost structures, and searchable databases like EC3.

Module 4: Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment (WBLCA)

Provides an overview of how to assess an entire building’s embodied carbon. Includes tool options, practical steps (inventorying materials, calculating impacts), and highlights common policy and certification requirements.

Module 5: Embodied Carbon Policy Strategies

An overview of U.S.-based embodied carbon policy types — from procurement rules to building code updates. While focused on the American context, the structure and framing can help inform Canadian policy development and advocacy.
